ZANDRA

Zandra is a 5 or 6 year old female. She knows how to use the doggie door. She loves other dogs and going to the park. She's not so keen on car rides yet.

Hi, I'm Zandra

I'm certain there's a biscuit over there somewhere for me

Aha, there it is.... I'm a very patient girl

SUSIE

Susie is a very sweet 6-year old female Basset. She loves to be around children and gets along with other dogs and cats. In fact she had a housemate cat previoulsy and they played together. She is also house trained. Her only health issue is her skin. Sometimes she gets very itchy because her skin gets very dry so she needs some special shampoo for her dry skin.

Hi - I'm Miss Susie...I like car rides

I like to sniff outside too

And of course I like to nap on my doggy bed

ELVIS & PRISCILLA

Elvis and his bride, Priscilla, are typical Basset Hounds: friendly, happy, goofy and full of slobbery kisses. They are fun loving and eager to meet new friends. They have big voices, big noses and an adventuresome spirit. Bassets need to go for long, daily walks and adventures to satisfy their instinct to follow a scent and also crave companionship with their human and doggie friends. Elvis and Priscilla are a bonded pair and need to be adopted together. They are available through Rancho Coastal Humane Society so please contact them directly if you are interested in Elvis and Priscilla.

CARMELLA

Carmella s a sweet young female basset mix. She needs a home with prior dog experience where someone is home a lot. She also cannot be an "outdoors" dog. For more information on Carmella please see her page at San Diego Special Needs Rescue. For information on adopting Carmella please contact Libby Russell.

APPLICATION

If you are interested in adopting, please follow one of the links below to complete our application. We almost always place all of our Bassets in homes in the San Diego area. If you live outside of California or in the Northern or Central regions of the state, please see the links page of our web site to find the web site for a Basset rescue group in your local area.

THE ADOPTION PROCESS

The search for an adoptive family begins with a review of the "Prospective Adoption Families" waiting list, and with a posting of information to our web site.

Potential new owners are first interviewed over the phone by Jerri. Her questions help determine if the people are good candidates for adopting a dog, especially a basset hound. She tries to match the personality of the dog as closely as she can with the family. Many of the rescued dogs have led pretty difficult lives and Jerri wants to make sure they are adopted by people who will truly cherish them and make them part of the family.

After the phone interview the family visits the Basset at the foster home to see if the personalities match, but the dog will not go home with the adoptive family that day. This is to prevent anyone from making an emotional or impulsive decision about adopting a Basset. There is a 24-hour waiting period in which the adoptive family decides if the dog is right for them. If the family decides that the Basset is not the dog of their dreams they will continue to meet other available Bassets until the right match is made.

Once a match is made and before the dog is placed a thorough house and yard check are conducted to make sure that they are both a safe, secure, and Basset-friendly environment. A dog will not be placed in a yard that is not securely fenced.

When the Basset goes to live with its new family, an adoption agreement is signed and a $250 donation is given to Basset Hound Rescue. The fee goes toward the cost to spay or neuter the dog, vaccinations, any needed medical care and the first year's license.
